  • A superb photo by Tim Neary...

    Par Elsa B dans News le 29 Avril 2012 à 11:26

Tim Neary, a conservationist, broadcaster and videophotographer, took this superb photo of a very chilled brown hyena in Tswalu Kalahari Reserve. This picture increases my strong desire to start fieldwork. I am now jumping up and down with impatience.

  • Brown hyena on a carcass - Rooiport Nature Reserve

    Par Elsa B dans News le 3 Avril 2012 à 10:40

Erwin & Coleen Niemand took a wonderful picture of a brown hyena again. This was taken in September 2011 in Rooiport Nature Reserve, one of the Diamond Route properties.

Brown hyenas are mostly nocturnal scavengers. This one is eating a red hartebeest (Acelpahus buselaphus) while several black backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) hang around the carcass.

This is very valuable information. Slowly we are building up the 21st century distribution map of the brown hyena, in Southern Africa. This sighting will be added to the MammalMAP database. Thanks Erwin & Coleen Niemand for your help!

    Hi everyone,

Erwin & Coleen Niemand are the official Diamond Route photographers.

Erwin & Coleen Niemand are currently in Tswalu Kalahari Reserve. They went to the brown hyena den just before sunset; and at to their surprise, the brown hyenas were already waiting for them. Look at this wonderful young creature:

The determination of den locations is great news! It substantially increases the probability of success of the coming captures. To know why and how we collar these animals, please read the page Why and how do we collar animals?

Here, you can discover Erwin & Coleen Niemand's stunning pictures of all the species present on the Diamond Route properties:
